Pre-Operation Advice for Getting Sedation Dentistry Procedure

Many people fear going to the dentist. In America, 9% to 15% of the population have dental phobia, according to Colgate. This usually stems from a bad experience with a dentist as a child. Fortunately, dentistry has come a long way in looking for ways to make any dental operation as painless and pleasant as possible. There are different sedation dentistry procedures that you can opt for to calm your nerves while a dentist in Las Vegas treats you.

Preparing for sedation dentistry

In this day and age, there is no reason for you not to seek the help of a compassionate dentist. You can get the best care possible by cooperating with the dentist. Make sure that you let him know the following:

  • Medical conditions you are being treated on. Your dentist will need to know what prescribed medications you are currently taking.
  • Over-the-counter drugs you took 72 hours prior including cold, headache or pain remedies, and vitamins.
  • All food supplement you are taking. If you have been maintaining herbal supplements to ease depression and anxiety symptoms, your Vegas dentist will need to adjust the medicine and its dosage to reduce interactions.
  • Food and drinks you consumed 8 hours prior to the operation.  The standard operating procedure in the US requires patients to keep from eating anything for 8 hours before the operation. Foods have enzymes that may counteract the effects of the sedatives in the body. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice is specifically prohibited 72 hours before and after a sedation dentistry procedure.

Special dietary recommendations for children

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has specific recommendations regarding fasting in children before sedation:

TYPE OF FOOD/LIQUID MINIMUM FASTING PERIOD
Clear liquids 2 hours before sedation
Formula, non-human milk, and light meal 6 hours before sedation
Fried or fatty foods or meat 8 hours before sedation
